What is a “cooling pond”?

1202

A cooling pond is a reservoir used to contain coolant for the purposes of the external cooling circuit. For this purpose either a natural or an artificially created pond is used. It should be emphasized that water and biota in such a pond are constantly monitored for radioactivity. Moreover, the ambient background radiation, natural for the area, has to be maintained – this guarantees the absence of the negative impact of man-made ionizing radiation on the ecological systems of the cooling pond.
